The name truffle was coined so as to describe the fancy chocolates and also to that of the delicious food. They are basically round and brown in colour.
The tree grows well in areas which consist of stiff fertile loamy soil and also grows in acidic and alkaline soil conditions and favours warmer climate. The tree bears its fruit when it attains 25 years. The seed of this tree needs to be stored in moist soil conditions otherwise it tends to lose its viability. The seeds of these trees need to be protected from mice and squirrels and also needs to be protected from colder climates. These plants produce a taproot and thus needs to be immediately transplanted otherwise the growth of this plant would be hindered. The tree bears flowers during the spring season but the seeds of these trees take at least two summers to ripen. The tree is adaptable to coarse, fine and medium textured soil and has a low CaCO3 content. It is not a drought resistant tree but a fire resistant one. The tree bears flowers during the mid spring season and the seed bearing season for this plant exist from summer to the end of fall. The reproduction of this plant is propagated by its bare roots and by the seeds and not propagated by its bulb. The root depth of this plant is 40 inches.
